Karoo Resort & Lodge was born from an unforgettable journey through Cape Town, South Africa, where the region's extraordinary landscapes, timeless craftsmanship, and genuine hospitality inspired a vision unlike anything else at Smith Mountain Lake. Rather than simply creating another lakeside destination, the goal was to thoughtfully incorporate elements of that experience into a resort that feels distinctive, intentional, and memorable.

The name Karoo pays homage to South Africa's iconic Karoo region, celebrated for its sweeping landscapes, remarkable natural beauty, and tranquil atmosphere. It embodies the same sense of serenity, exploration, and connection to nature that defines the guest experience throughout the resort.

That inspiration is woven into every detail. Our signature luxury canvas cabins were handcrafted in South Africa before making their journey to Virginia, while our handcrafted wood-burning hot tubs were also built in South Africa by skilled artisans, bringing authentic craftsmanship and distinctive design to the shores of Smith Mountain Lake.

 

Each accommodation has been thoughtfully named after notable African destinations, landscapes, and cultural landmarks—including Kilimanjaro, Virunga, Stellenbosch, and Nakupenda, meaning "I love you" in Swahili. These carefully selected names are more than identifiers; they honor the places that inspired Karoo's creation while adding meaning, character, and a sense of discovery to every stay.
